The princely residence was once one of the most important baroque palaces in central Germany. The entire three-wing ensemble was built in five construction phases from 1681 to 1773, with the east wing being the last. Important master builders and artists from all over Europe were involved in the construction. In the last days of the war in 1945, the castle was badly hit by bombs and burned down completely. Valuable documents and works of art were lost. The east wing of the palace, which still exists, clearly shows what enormous dimensions the entire structure once possessed. The park belonging to the palace was once laid out as a baroque garden and was transformed into a landscape garden from 1798. Today, the palace garden with the palace pond still covers an area of over 150,000 square meters and is characterized by the preserved wing of the palace.

The Förderverein Schloss Zerbst e. V. preserves the still existing baroque building fabric through security and restoration measures. From the warm spring months into the fall, there are various exhibitions and rooms in the castle to visit and events to attend.

Within sight of the east wing is the former princely riding hall. It also contained a gallery for the court chapel under the famous composer and Kapellmeister Johann Friedrich Fasch (1688 - 1756), a contemporary of Johann Sebastian Bach.

The interior of the baroque building was equipped with state-of-the-art technology as a city hall. Balls, concerts and exhibitions are now held here. In front of the building stands the only monument to Catherine the Great in Germany. The bronze statue is a gift to the city of Zerbst and was inaugurated in 2010.

The tourist route "Catherine the Great" leads in and around the palace garden to various stations that tell about the courtly life of the Anhalt princess, her family and the city's history.
