After the end of the costly Seven Years’ War, Friedrich II had a colonist settlement for Saxon weavers and spinners built in the monastery district of Zinna (now a town district of Jüterbog) between 1764 and 1777. The king brought the colonists to the area to make cloth and silk fabrics to stimulate the state’s weakened economy. In honour of the town’s founder, Friedrich II, there is a monument on the central market square, which is a miniature depiction of the townscape of 1864.

A royal planned town

The royal “planned town of Zinna” had a strictly symmetrical layout. A rectangular market square with angled corners was built at the central street crossing. The buildings on the street were originally one storey with simple plaster façades with hipped and half-hipped roofs. Individual buildings were highlighted by mansard roofs: the master’s residence, the “Fabriquenhaus”, the so-called “Grafschaft” and the District Forestry Office. The latter was stayed in by the king when he visited the place. The representative Baroque building is still the centrepiece of the weavers’ colony that has essentially retained its structure. At the former “Fabriquenhaus”, there is now a hand weaving shop and a museum.
