In 1926, the town of Luckenwalde launched a competition to build a new school. One of the requirements included was an auditorium that could be used as a stage. The competition was won by Luckenwalde’s town architect, Graf, and the building was realised in collaboration with town architect Brennecke and the architect Backes from 1927 to 1930. Graf combined the building styles of the most modern, functional architecture of the early 1920s. This, along with the unique connection of the theatre and the school building, make Graf’s building a fantastic piece of architectural history from the late 1920s.

The theatre even had its own troupe from 1937 to 1944, originally known as the ‘first state theatre of Mark Brandenburg’("I.Landestheater der Mark Brandenburg GmbH").

Since 1952, the town theatre has been a classic location for guest performances.

Today, having undergone comprehensive restoration and renovation work between 1991 and 1998, the town theatre is equipped with modern technology and includes 726 seats in its auditorium. The theatre basement and restaurant, with 60 seats, hosts smaller-format events.

With a disabled lift and accessible auditorium seats, the town theatre is also equipped to welcome wheelchair users.
