The eleven acre protected zoo is Dessau’s biggest and most popular local recreation area. The first sod was turned at the zoo on March 7, 1958. From year to year, the zoo became more attractive with more and more animals. Lots of enclosures and aviaries were built. 500 animals and around 120 species now live among rare tress and shrubs. Over 1,000 trees, of which about 125 are labelled species, define the profile of the park. That is why the zoo, like no other institution, is an attraction for children and adults and is also ideal for clearly presenting the origins, habitats and environments of the different animals. Because knowledge of the animal world also increases understanding of the environment.
