The former marshlands of the River Havel offer a particularly interesting bird-watching opportunity. The extremely rare great bustard is resident here. The protection and development of great bustard populations is the responsibility of the State Ornithological Institute and the friends’ association Großtrappenschutz e.V. in Buckow near Nennhausen. To see great Bustards you require good binoculars, stamina and good luck. In winter the bustards stay in small groups, mainly on rape seed fields. The mating season of these shy birds is from mid-March to mid-May. During this time there are guided hikes and observation outings. About 2 kilometres southeast, near Garlitz, there are two observation towers directly in the mating area which are freely accessible.
