The first documentary reference to a pastor in the village of Bahnitz was in 1225. However, the medieval village church was so dilapidated in 1777 that a church was built in its place in the Baroque style and consecrated in 1782. The church was so badly damaged during the Second World War that the building had to be closed in 1962. After that, church services were held in a construction trailer and then in a community room at Dorfstrasse 11. In 1969/70, the old church was torn down. It was too big for only 200 parishioners anyway.

The idea came about of turning the stump of the church tower that was still standing into a chapel. In 1978, the building materials were allocated and, after four years of construction, the current church was consecrated in 1982. It is probably the smallest village church in Germany with only 30 seats. Services are held there on a regular basis.

The church is open from May to Sept, daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Key from Annedore Pfeiffer telephone +49 33877 52060. The village is also home to numerous artists’ studios.
