Gortz village church is about 14 kilometres north east of the town of Brandenburg an der Havel. The place of worship is a Late Gothic rectangular cobblestone building with brick edging and dates from between 1480-1500 in terms of style. The rectangular hall with the graduated pointed arch portal and the little shuttered window on the south side of the church are original. The beautiful blind arcade gable on the east side also date from when the church was built. All the other windows were added during the Baroque period and replaced with Gothic Revival pointed arch windows in 1906. The square west tower was built during the Baroque period before the west façade, which is now the entrance to the church.

Inside, visitors are greeted by uniform historic décor dating from 1906. The ceilings, window surrounds and walls are painted with various rambling plant motifs. The Baroque pulpit alter dating from 1724 is typical of the period. The columns entwined with vines and ears of corn carry a beam with a broken pediment. The pulpit takes the place of the altarpiece. The visual counterpoint to the pulpit altar is formed by the organ gallery with the restored Eifert organ.

The Förderverein Gortz e.V. friends’ association works to preserve the village church and to promote culture and tourism. The association organises concerts, theatre performances and readings as well as the “Gortzer Sommerlustgarten” (summer pleasure garden) and markets. The association also offer art-historical guided tours on “the beauty of the land and the village churches around Lake Beetzsee” and on the “Aescetic and Cistercian monasteries in Brandenburg, Kloster Zinna & Lehnin”.
