The original church was destroyed during the Thirty Years’ War. In its place, a half-timbered building was built in 1698 and then a Neo-Romanesque brick tower with a vaulted roof was built in 1886. The history of the village of Kleßen was significantly shaped by the von Bredow family. The half-timbered building of the church nave had become so dilapidated by 1929 that a new building began according to plans by Church Building Inspector Dr Curt Steinberg. Church painter Robert Sandfort was commissioned to paint the church. Most of the interior fitting of the simple church hall came from the previous church and are still there to this day: The pulpit altar with Rococo figures, a Renaissance baptismal font dating from 1607 and the galleries painted with coats of arms and inscriptions. The richly decorated Baroque organ front was also preserved – the instrument behind it was replaced with a pneumatic organ by Gustav Heinze of Sorau on the occasion of the re-consecration of the church in 1932/34.

In 2007, the restoration of the interior began. Church painter Karl-Heinz Sandow restored the original colour scheme. Having restored the outer skin of the church, the building now glows freshly plastered in the light ochre of Kleßen sand.

In cooperation with the owners of the castle, concerts regularly take place at the church. The church can be opened by arrangement by contacting Brigitte Schmitt, Dorfstr. 35  a, telephone +49 33235 21365.
