The church is the patronage church of a branch of the von Rochow family, and it was inaugurated in 1750. The estate owner Ludolph Ehrenreich von Rochow had arranged for the church’s predecessor building to be converted into a baroque church, based on designs by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff. Among the church’s most prominent features are its 18th century pulpit altar with pillars painted in a marble design, the life-sized baptism angel made of oak wood that holds the baptismal basin, and the oldest bell of the Mark Brandenburg region from 1233. The bell is from the predecessor church and it narrowly escaped being melted down in World War I. The organ is from 1844 and from the workshop of Gottlieb Heise.

It is believed that the lavish outfitting of the church is due to a bet, in which von Rochow claimed that he would create “the region’s fattest church”. His son Botho Wiegand von Rochow’s wedding to Knobeldorff’s daugher Caroline Juliane von Knobelsdorff helped von Rochow to achieve this goal. The alliance coat of this marriage can be seen above the patronage box. Von Rochow died just a year after the church had been completed. The family crypt is located under the sanctuary and can also be accessed via an outside door.

Nowadays, the church is a pilgrimage station on the Bernhard’s Trail and it can be viewed by request.
