A picturesque landscape surrounded by historic buildings, countless lakes and pink cherry blossom trees. Walking down the cobbled road to Werder (Havel), one can’t help but think about the town’s beloved Tree Blossom Festival and its tradition in winemaking. This state-approved resort has much more to offer, though. Werder (Havel), a town with a historic town centre, is also home to a few very special buildings, starting from the Altes Rathaus (‘Old Town Hall’) via the post mill all the way to the market square and its wells. You might not expect to find a cinema in this company,

but the Scala-Kulturpalast, known by the name ‘Fontane Lichtspiele’ until the turn of the century, is far from out of place here. This building, constructed in 1940, features a large auditorium with around 200 seats. One stand-out feature: the illuminated advertising over the cinema’s entrance portal. This harmonious backdrop has also been recognised and used by filmmakers, such as the cinema’s appearance in the children’s feature film ‘Hanni & Nanni 3’. The two committed teachers Ms Mägerlein and Mr Gordon make their first tentative advances at the Scala cinema, only to find that they have fallen victim to a prank by their pupils.

The sound of a clapperboard was also heard around two kilometres away, this time for the award-winning feature film ‘Goodbye Berlin’ by director Fatih Akin. The film, based on Wolfgang Herrndorf’s book ‘Why We Took The Car’, was shot at the Ernst-Haeckel-Gymnasium school. As soon as Maik steps foot in the classroom he finds himself unable to concentrate on lessons as all his attention is devoted to his crush Tatjana.

Anyone looking to explore this Havel town’s cinematic sights should not miss out on a visit to the Scala-Kulturpalast or the many other culinary and cultural highlights on the banks of the River Havel.
