Encircling the former Cistercian Monastery of Lehnin, the Bernhardspfad commemorates Saint Bernard of Clairvaux and his spiritual legacy. For many people, pilgrimage has become a way to pause, reflect, and gather new strength. Even without a spiritual focus, this route offers a highly rewarding hiking experience.

The northern route (21 km) begins at the monastery complex, whose visit is both inspiring and peaceful. Leaving the grounds via the historic oak avenue once used by the monks, you’ll walk through expansive pine forests to the village of Nahmitz, before re-entering the quiet, dense woodland. The spacious natural swimming area at Netzener See, with its pier and sunbathing lawn, is the perfect spot for a break. From there, the path follows the lake’s untouched shoreline, with wild, romantic views of the water.

In the Rietzer See nature reserve, towering reed beds and open grasslands dominate the scenery, providing a vital habitat for countless protected bird species. The trail continues through the villages of Trechwitz and Damsdorf, both home to beautiful churches, before leading you back to Nahmitz. From there, you follow the Klosterheide along the eastern shore of Klostersee, returning to Lehnin.

The southern route (14 km) starts in Lehnin and winds through the village and forest to the shores of Gohlitzsee. The trail follows the lake for a while, before heading through varied woodland toward Rädel, where meadows and heathlands occasionally open up scenic views of the water. Beyond Rädel, sandy and hilly fields lead you to Emstal. From the higher ground, you’ll enjoy views back toward the village and ahead to the Rädeler Zitzel and Emstaler Zitzel — small glacial lakes that serve as important refuges for waterfowl.

In Emstal, you can visit the Bakery Museum with its historic ovens, where the traditional Emstal round loaves are baked on select days each year. From there, the trail leads back through the forest until you reach the first houses of Lehnin near the sports center.

Tip: All the churches along the route can be visited for quiet reflection or sightseeing. It’s best to check in advance with local contacts for access details.
