During the spring and autumn migration season, up to 100,000 geese gather around the lake, joined by numerous waders, ducks and great white egrets and also hundreds of cranes. A pair of ospreys regularly breeds on the northern shore and in summer, grey geese raise their young on Gülper See.

Directions:
  • Public transport: Take the RE4 from Berlin central station (Hauptbahnhof) to Rathenow. From here, take bus 684 to Prietzen (approximately 1 hour 45 minutes).
  • Car: From Berlin via the B5, L17, B102 and L175 to Prietzen (approximately 1 hour 45 minutes).

Route description: The nature trail begins at the Bockwindmühle (windmill) near Prietzen. From here, you can walk along the dyke on the shore of Lake Gülper See and you will have plenty of opportunity to let your gaze wander over the water. It is advisable to have binoculars with you if you would like to identify the bird species by the lake and on the water. Information panels along the way will help you to identify them. Nature lovers who wish to devote more time to bird watching can take a seat in one of the two small observation towers along the route.

The last section of the nature trail passes through a small section of woodland, where more information panels provide details about the birds in the forest. After about 400 metres of forest, the path makes a sharp right turn and you reach the end of the nature trail. Here you will find the last and largest birdwatching tower.
