The nature trail runs right alongside the Rietzer See nature reserve, where thousands of greylag geese and cranes gather in autumn during migration season before heading south — an impressive spectacle for visitors of all ages.

This easy triangular loop follows a wide country path from the bridge over the Emster Canal to the village of Netzen and then, skirting the Netzener See, back to the starting point. As you walk, your gaze can wander freely across the surrounding meadows and fields, and with a bit of luck, you might even spot a white-tailed eagle soaring above. Even cranes that stay through the winter can often be seen along the route.

At twelve well-designed information stations, you’ll find fascinating facts about this part of the Havelland and the unique lakes and moorlands in the area. At the start of the loop, several stations focus on the cultural landscape of the Havelland, highlighting stone piles and brushwood hedges as habitats for small animals, the adaptation of species to human presence, and the development of agriculture over the past two hundred years.

As if on cue, the Netzen cows often stand along the path, curiously watching hikers pass by. Further along, the trail explains the typical animals and plants of this open landscape and their interdependence in the ecosystem. On the final stretch, you’ll catch glimpses of the trees lining the Netzener See. Back along the Emster Canal, several stations provide insights into the habitat in and around the water, especially beavers and otters, which thrive here. With a careful eye, you can spot traces of beaver activity along the way.

Tip: Be sure to take the short detour to the birdwatching tower at Strengsee! Binoculars are available on-site, so you can observe countless water birds and even record your sightings in the observation book.
