The fruit-growing area southwest of Potsdam has not only been supplying the capital Berlin with fresh fruit for over 100 years, it has also been one of the most popular areas for Berlin day-trippers. The undulating landscape with its embedded lakes, numerous palaces, fruit plantations and last but not least Germany’s northernmost wine-growing area makes it a perfect area for a trip to the countryside. The hiking trail was created only a few years ago to line up these attractions like a string of pearls.

Length: 16 kilometres (4-5 hours)

Start: Petzow

Finish: Krielow

Logo/route sign: green signs with apple

How to get there: take the RE 1 (Magdeburg) to Werder/Havel from Berlin central station (Hauptbahnhof). From here, take bus 631 to Werder/Havel, Post, where you can take bus 636 to Petzow Palace Park (approximately 1 hour).

Return journey: From Krielow, take bus 637 to Groß Kreutz. Continue from here by taking the R1 (Frankfurt/Oder) to Berlin central station (Hauptbahnhof) (approximately 1 hour).

Route: Petzow, Glindow, Derwitz, Krielow

Route description: The trail starts at its eastern end in the small hamlet of Petzow. Leading north, it passes the nature reserve Glindower Alpen (the mountainous area created by the mining of clay is also worth a hike) to Glindow. Here the trail turns west towards Elisabethhöhe, however, before reaching the fruit-growing area of Werder (Havel). There are several farms where you can stop off for a rest or pick fruit. Several terminal moraine hills offer far-reaching views of the landscape, which has an incomparable charm – especially when the fruit trees are in blossom. The trail passes through old cherry orchards and newly planted apple orchards, before finally reaching Derwitz. A few hundred metres further on there is a bus stop near Krielow from where you can set off on the journey home.

Sights:
  • Petzow: Palace Park, Schinkel church
  • Glindow: Ziegeleimuseum (brickworks museum), open-air pool Glindower Alpen
  • Derwitz: Village church, Lilienthal memorial

Possible combinations: Around the Havel Lakes near Potsdam

Trail conditions/surface: not specified
