Few people have made the Mark Brandenburg as well known beyond its borders as Theodor Fontane did with his literary work. The town of Plaue, which he immortalized in his book “Five Castles”, is a wonderful place to explore while tracing the footsteps of this famous wanderer of Brandenburg.

Starting at the old Havel Bridge, this quiet cultural and historical walk takes you on a one-hour tour through Plaue. Eleven stations along the way share insights into the town during Fontane’s time and his frequent visits to his friend Carl Ferdinand Wiesike. Carefully chosen quotations bring the poet’s own voice to life.

The first two stations lie across the Havel, opposite the castle. In the 19th century, Wiesike purchased the Margaretenhof as a private retreat and developed it according to his wishes. Here you will find the modest Wiesike Villa, where Fontane spent “many pleasant hours under Plaue’s eternally blue sky” in the garden with his friend. Just a few steps away lies the Wiesike family grave.

Back along the castle shore, Plaue Castle dominates the scene, its long and eventful history still visible in its architecture today. Following the trail along Lake Plauer See, where the Havel widens into a broad curve, the castle park invites you to wander further. Past the dreamy castle pond, you’ll come to the Fontane Site, created to keep the author’s personal connection to Plaue alive. The nearby clay pigeon shooting stand offers the most popular vantage point for park visitors, with open views across the water.

Under the shade of old park trees, the path curves toward the parish church and the imposing Angel Gate. Exiting the castle park, the Fontane Trail of Plaue leads you over historic cobblestones through the narrow, winding streets of the town and back to the Havel Bridge, passing several historic buildings along the way that are explained at the designated stations.

Tip: Take a seat at the Fontane Site beside the bronze sculpture of the great author. Soak in the atmosphere by the water and, like Fontane himself, listen to the rustling reeds and the gentle sounds of the river.
