In order to create the correct height around the Jahrtausendbrücke (Millennium Bridge), the main road had to be backfilled and the buildings in this area were demolished. The Jahrtausendbrücke was supposed to have a symbolic meaning. It was to help bring the people from the two parts of the town closer together and promote the unification of the whole town through better understanding. The old and the new eras were to be brought together by the new bridge, so to speak.

In April 1945, the Jahrtausendbrücke was blown up and rebuilt in 1946/47. In July 1993, the bridge had to be closed again to cars for safety reasons. In 1995/96, the Jahrtausendbrücke was demolished and a new bridge was built. The sophisticatedly designed bridge was inaugurated on December 4, 1996.
