Watchtowers were a special feature of Brandenburg towns. The cylindrical, four-storey tower was built in about 1400 and was connected to a gate with battlements that had a wall walk leading to a door. The connection to the town wall can be seen on the north side. The tower has arrow slits on all sides. The protruding privy on the west side over the earlier moat shows the position of the former watch chamber. The connection is formed by a protruding half-timbered storey (wattle) with a conical roof and attic.

Plauer Torturm was just a 17 metre high round stump for a long time and the upper half-timbered storey with its conical roof could not be preserved.

After falling to ruin over many years, an expressionist crenellation and a new brick cone with a forges stork’s nest (restored in 1985) were added to the tower in 1928/29 on the occasion of the town’s millennium celebrations. Further additions in the Romantic style have since been demolished.
