Originally erected in 1474 on the market square of the New Town, the Roland statue was moved in 1716 to the Town Hall, as the 5.35-metre tall sandstone figure prevented the Prussian garrison troops from using the market square for exercise. In 1941 during the Second World War, the Roland statue was dismantled, relocated and buried. Following the destruction of the New Town Hall in 1945, the statue was moved to its current position in front of the Old Town Hall.
