The White Maria, also known as the Mourning Maria, is a memorial from 1917 dedicated to the inmates who died in the prisoner-of-war camp. The sculpture was presumably created by a French prisoner of war. It is located on Galgenberg near Rohrbeck, where over 30,000 prisoners of war were interned until 1918. Close to the sculpture was the cemetery for the prisoners of war, where 186 Russians, 53 French, 38 English, 25 Italians, and three Romanians were buried.

The figure depicts a woman bent over in grief, painfully covering her face with her hands. Her expression embodies the helplessness and suffering of war in a poignant way, made particularly tangible by the image of this mourning woman, mother, or daughter suffering from loss. The fact that this statue was created by a prisoner of war, whose name and fate are unknown, and that this memorial seems to have been forgotten in the fields between Galgenberg, the federal highway, and horse pastures, enhances the compassion for the losses depicted.
