The village of Ribbeck became quite famous because of Fontane’s popular ballad “Herr von Ribbeck auf Ribbeck im Havelland”. Since May 1, 2019 – in addition to the most famous pear tree in Germany – you can also experience the Fontane Museum at Ribbeck Castle, which was opened on the occasion of the writer’s 200th birthday.

In this fully re-designed permanent exhibition, visitors learn more about the links between Fontane’s 19th century, how the famous poem came about, the real pear tree and the history of the castle building. Various highlights, presented using modern museum technology, help visitors to understand the events of the time. So they are greeted in person by the famous writer in the form of a projection and a pear that can be walked into awaits them in the museum.

Learn more about greenhouse cultivation as used to be practised at Ribbeck Castle in the exhibition area of the glasshouse and explore the rich history of Havelland based on illustrations, prehistoric finds and historic postcards. Listen to selected text passages from Fontane’s works as you sit in a comfy armchair and allow yourself to be taken back to the time of the famous poet.
