The baroque castle that used to be the ancestral seat of the von Rochow family is now a museum. After 1760, the castle grounds that were created at the time the castle was built, were converted into a 21 hectares big English landscape garden by Friedrich Eberhard von Rochow.

The natural space with its complex system of paths and waterways that also includes some farming land and meadows, was perceived as a perfect example of “fine garden art”. Among other measures, Friedrich Eberhard von Rochow arranged for the bed of the river Plane to be deepened and for its banks to be raised.

The “pleasure garden” – a decorative fruit and kitchen garden – used to be very close to the manor house. A system of ditches and fish ponds extended all the way to the estate. A little further to the south, there was a “Thiergarten” (zoo) that was first mentioned in a document in 1777. In 1794, von Rochow had a statue erected to honour his schoolmaster Heinrich Julius Bruns (1746-1794). It is the only known memorial to a schoolteacher in Germany.

The estate park in Reckahn is among the oldest landscape gardens in the State of Brandenburg.
