Construction of Grütz lock was completed in 1911. It enables the bypassing of the weirs at the breakthrough to the village of Grütz below Rathenow in the area of the Lower Havel. The gradient dammed up by the weirs is only slight. The barge lock was demolished in the course of renovation work on the weir in 2003. Grütz lock is located directly in the nature reserve Untere Havel Nord, for this reason it is forbidden to enter reed belts, bank woods and floating leaf areas.
