The lock in Havelberg is an inland lock. It was built in 1936 and has since served as a link between the Havel waterway and the river Elbe. The outside head of the lock is integrated directly into the Elbe embankment. There are bathing jetties on both sides of the lock that enable canoeists to carry their boats past the lock.

The lock gate is 12 metres wide, the usable chamber length of the lock is 225 metres, and the usable chamber width is 20 metres.
