Documentary evidence of Rathenow town moat dates back as far as 1288. A round lock was built there in the middle of the 16th century, allowing boats to pass through continuously. Since the construction of the first town lock at the present location in 1732, various alterations and renovations have been made. Up until 1977, the lock also had wooden gates rather than the steel gates it has now. At the end of the 19th century, an artificial shipping canal was created with its own lock. Since then, the town lock has only been used by pleasure boats and passenger ships.
