Rathenow main lock was first went into operation in April 1901 as a barge train lock. One distinctive feature here is the fact that walls of the lock are sloping.

The gate width is 9.60 metres, the usable chamber length is 210.60 metres and the usable chamber width is 10.20 metres.

In Rathenow there are numerous weirs which can be avoided by passing through the town lock (Stadtschleuse) and the main lock (Hauptschleuse).
