Schönwalde lock connects the Lower Havel Waterway with the Upper Havel Waterway. This makes it possible to bypass the Berlin city area. The lock first went into operation on June 18, 1952. Due to a shortage of materials during the construction period, a special construction method was chosen: the bottoms of the lock heads are at the same level, which means that the jamb drop occurs before the upper gate. Due to this construction method, the upper and lower heads of the lock are identical in construction and it was possible to provide only one pair of gate wings as a replacement. Tugboats were still commonly used at the time of construction. An electric capstan was built on the northern side of the lock heads to facilitate passing.
