Countless expanses of water, sprawling lowlands, densely wooded hills, small villages with half-timbered houses and brick buildings: All of this in the Westhavelland Nature Park. Its life blood comes from the River Havel, and in the autumn and spring tens of thousands of migratory birds stop off here on their way to and from their winter homes. Shore zones, meadows and bodies of water provide refuge for rare species from birds to dragonflies and bats. Storks, otters and beavers can also frequently be seen here.

The River Havel has been straightened and fortified to make it more suitable for inland shipping, but now the river is to be restored in many places. You can find out more about Europe’s biggest river restoration project at the exhibition in the visitor centre of the Westhavelland Nature Park. Experience the characteristics of an unspoilt river with the water model, and at the listening station the animals themselves have their say. Imagine you’re sitting on the banks of the River Havel on a spring evening and hear the many different calls of the nocturnal animals. The star experience room gives you this very experience all year round.
