The path around the lake Bernsteinsee is ideal for a rather relaxing bicycle tour. In line with the principles of sustainable tourism, the circular tour offers great opportunities for nature observations. If you are lucky, you may spot a crane by the side of the trail. The greenish colour of Bernsteinsee is particularly striking when seen from the air.

Start/finish (recommended): Spreetal, town district Burghammer:

Circular tour via: Burghammer - Burg

Trail conditions: Most of the circular tour is accounted for by the asphalted path along the lakeshore. In the western part, take the cycle path on which the Lower Lusatian Mining Tour and the Frog Cycle Path are signposted. The terrain is mostly level.

Points of interest along the route:
  • Church in Burghammer (neo-Gothic brick structure)


Food & drinks: no eateries along the way, please bring your own food and drinks

Parking: at the rest area on the northern shore near Burghammer

Information: The kilometre posts with the orange-coloured designs that are positioned along the lake circuit every kilometre, are intended to give cyclists greater security. The posts are printed with the lake’s name, the number of the circular trail, the current kilometre, the direction in which kilometres are counted, and the precise GPS coordinates. The circular trail around Bernsteinsee has the number 5.

Useful information about the bicycle tour:
  • Bathing is not permitted in the lake
  • Viewpoints: several small rest areas around the lake, the most striking viewpoint is in the north, slightly above the shore, near the village Burghammer
  • Public toilets: none
  • Playgrounds: none
  • Most of the lake circuit is unshaded, there is shade along the western section
  • The lake circuit features a continuous system of kilometre posts and it is circuit number 5
  • Connected lake circuits: Lake Scheibe See (12 kilometres)


Tip: Use the rest areas around Bernsteinsee to watch the outstanding flora and fauna of the post-mining landscape.
