The 440 hectares big recultivated surface mining lake is located near the town Vetschau. Just under half of the lake (170 hectares) is a bird sanctuary. Setting foot on the island in the southern part of the lake is not permitted. The bay on the eastern shore is also part of the sanctuary. There are various suitable fishing spots around the lake. In the south-eastern part near the campsite, there are a few zones with shallow water. Fishing from boats is permitted. Convenient access and parking are provided at Camping Gräbendorfer See in Gräbendorf, on the right hand side when coming from Casel. Specific nature protection rules are published on the website of the local association.
