This Polish island, situated on the River Neiße between Guben and Gubin, can be reached via bridges from both towns. The island was home to a theatre opened in 1874. Though the theatre miraculously survived the Second World War almost undamaged, it then fell victim to an arson attack in 1945. Today the original site is the location of the rebuilt entrance portal with remains of the former theatre’s original pillars. The theatre gardens were decorated with a small monument to Goethe’s muse Corona Schröter, who was born in Guben in 1751. Part of the monument is still standing today, but the bust has been lost. This island on the River Neiße has become a park for walkers and cyclists with well-maintained facilities and seating in the shade of old trees. On the edge of the path there is an enlarged wooden reproduction of the Vettersfelde Goldfish. The original is part of the Scythian treasure found in Vettersfelde, not far from Guben, in 1882, now housed in Berlin’s Altes Museum.
