The largest nature reserve with an area of around 5,800 hectares was created in 2001 in the Saxon part of the Lusatian Lakeland north of Hoyerswerda: the Lusatian Lakeland Nature Conservation Project. From the monotonous pine forests that the mining reclamation company had created, the conservationists are developing mixed forests with oaks, lime trees, beeches and pines that are typical of the Lusatian Lakeland. Rare breeds of livestock such as linseed sheep and heath sheep graze on sandy dry grasslands and wet heaths. This protects the areas from too much woody vegetation. Heck cattle and wild horses tend the steppe-like open land areas.

These areas are already habitats for many endangered bird species such as the fallow pipit, nightjar and hoopoe. Every year, cranes breed at the mining lakes, whose structurally rich banks offer sufficient protection for their offspring. The European gray wolf also roams the extensive area.

Discover this bizarre landscape "second hand" on tours with certified nature and landscape guides and experience the unique flora and fauna in the area of the Lusatian Lakeland Nature Conservation Project - an impressive piece of national natural heritage. Among other things, you will learn why the plant development in the Lusatian Lakeland can actually be compared to the phase after the Ice Age and how ecological forest conversion works.

If you would like to experience this undisturbed nature on a guided tour, this is possible through individual guided tours on foot, by bike or in an off-road vehicle. A guided tour takes place for a minimum of two and a maximum of ten people. For example, the tours can be half-day (about 3-4 hours) and full-day (about 6 hours). Date and meeting point can be planned individually by prior arrangement.
