Gut Geisendorf - The Lusatian Lignite Cultural Forum
Continue readingcollapse
Lower Lusatia is undergoing a unique process of change. Mining has dominated the region since the 19th century. But Lusatia is no longer characterized solely by imposing opencast lignite mines. Today, it is above all a place of new beginnings. Symbolic of this is the artificial lake district - the Lusatian Lakeland - which is unique in Europe. The Lusatian Lignite Cultural Forum has been located in Gut Geisendorf on the edge of the Welzow-Süd open pit mine since 1996. It was the only building to remain in Geisendorf, whose inhabitants were relocated to Neupetershain as a result of the progress of the Welzow-Süd open pit mine. Today it is a renowned cultural address in the state of Brandenburg. In addition to a permanent exhibition on the history and future of lignite in Lusatia, exhibitions and concerts are held regularly.

The second floor of the building features a permanent exhibition on the history and prospects of lignite mining in Lusatia. The visitor takes a short journey through time in three thematic areas:
  •     Our ancestors and their socio-historical conditions (archaeological excavations, historical agricultural equipment from two centuries, regional mining history).
  •     Industrialization and lignite production (historical library, technical models, display boards)
  •     Reclamation of the post-mining landscape (geological-topographical model, image simulations)
