It was by a lucky coincidence that this town hall and the houses to the north of the market square survived the final days of the Second World War practically unscathed, leaving the people of Hoyerswerda with a small jewel intact at the heart of the old town. The protected building with a Renaissance facade and portal dates back to 1449 and is crowned with a golden town hall clock.

On the market square you’ll find yet another artwork by Jürgen von Woyski. The Sorbenbrunnen (“Sorbian Fountain”) is a reminder of the Sorbian influence on the area around Hoyerswerda for many centuries – for a long time the Sorbians were the only inhabitants of this region.

There is also a Saxon postal milestone on the market square, part of a monument protection scheme. It has stood there since 1730 with only short breaks, and is engraved with old Prussian distances.
