On the trail of the fascinating transformation of the landscape from open-cast mining to a bathing lake. It is a process that cannot be experienced every day. The view from the terrace of the Mediterranean bistro sweeps far and wide over the glittering waters of the new Großräschen Lake, at the interface between old and new land! Just 20 years ago it seemed as if civilisation had ended here. Here still roads and houses, there already dusty desert. Until 1999, the Meuro open-cast mine yielded 342 million tonnes of lignite. Then a programme for the future of the mining region was launched: with 30 projects, the International Building Exhibition (IBA) Fürst-Pückler-Land provided impulses for structural change in the region.

The visitor centre was the IBA Terraces: minimalist architecture consisting of three building cubes connected by terraces. These are nestled between the pier built from a former open-cast mine, a newly planted vineyard and the Victoriahöhe vantage point. Today the IBA Terraces are home to the Lusatian Lakeland Visitor Centre. An ideal starting point for tours of the reinventing region.

12 questions - 12 answers: In the visitor centre a picture exhibition tells about the past and the future. Where do we come from? Where are we going? Großräschen's mining and clinker tradition, Saved buildings, From the Ilse-Ledigenheim to the Seehotel, From the open-cast large-scale equipment repair site to the harbour, From the former open-cast mine slope to the vineyard, Planning new residential areas ... visitors can discover all this and more interesting and worth knowing things in the exhibition. Afterwards, they can relax in the bistro or on the terrace with coffee and cake, cold beer and soft drinks, iced coffee or simply in a deck chair with a glass of Großräschen wine.

The local tourist information office provides information about the Lusatian Lakeland, sells cycling maps and always has a good tip ready.

Tips:
  • The tour operator iba-aktiv-tours offers day tours through the changing landscape. By bus, small train, jeep, quad, raft, Segway or bicycle: the choice is yours!
