Expert guides and a multimedia information centre help visitors to understand how the high-tech plant works. The crowing glory is a ride to the 161 metre high observation tower. From here, you can see across the nearby Welzow-Süd surface mine and the Lusatian Lake District being created all around.

Building work on the powerful double-unit plant in the Schwarze Pumpe industrial estate took five years. It was officially taken into operation in 1998. Each day, around 36,000 tonnes of rough lignite from the Welzow-Süd surface mine are used to produce energy. The plant supplies not only electricity but also process steam and district heating for the region.

Guided tour: Anyone wishing to take a guided tour of the power plant must book in advance. This is possible on Saturdays between april an october. Individual group tours can also be requested through the excursio visitor centre all the year.
