The viewpoint “Randriegel” by the lake Altdöberner See, is a memorial to the region’s mining past and it allows for unobstructed views of the lake that is currently being flooded. The viewpoint’s design resembles an oversized type of drainpipe that is used in surface mining and called a “Randriegel” in German. Inside the pipe, there are information panels about the drainage process, the restructuring work that visitors can experience and the development of the lake Altdöberner See.

The “Randriegel” near Altdöbern was built on the site that used to be home to the village Groß Jauer that had to give way to the former surface mining site Greifenhain. Thanks to a big perspex panel, visitors can once again take a look down the old village road of Groß Jauer. Through this window to the past and the future, viewers can see the outline of the former street scene layered over the lake Altdöberner See that is currently being created.

The viewpoint that was built in 2008, is also accessible for visitors with limited mobility.
