At the northern edge of the Welzow-Süd surface mine, the viewing platform with the unconventionally designed staircase is located at a height of 171 metres. It provides a magnificent panoramic view of the active surface mine and the Lusatian landscape as far as the Upper Lusatian mountains. The 117-tonne steel structure, which is reminiscent of the boom of a conveyor bridge or the neck of a giraffe, is equipped with an inclined elevator which people with limited mobility can also use.

The viewing platform is located on a hilltop in the terminal moraine landscape of the “Steinitz Alps”. About eight minutes’ walking distance away is the Steinitzhof. The three-sided farm with its historical boulder architecture is a socio-cultural integration project and the centre of the Steinitz Cultural Park.

The Steinitzhof has a café/restaurant and on Sundays during certain seasons there is a snack bar. It also organises guided theme hikes, for example on “flora and fauna” and the history of mining, as well as workshops.

For those arriving by car, parking spaces are available at the viewing platform and at the Steinitzhof.
