The Wolkenberg viewpoint is located at the edge of the Welzow-Süd surface mine on recultivated land. There is a refuge on the highest point of the Wolkenberg. From here there is a good view of the post-mining landscape and the vineyard, with grapes growing on the southern slope of the Wolkenberg. 26,000 vines have been planted where once the village of Wolkenberg stood. At the foot of the Wolkenberg stands a memorial for the former village, which had to make way for surface mining in 1991.

Many birds can be observed here, especially during the migration periods in April/May and August/September. Frequently and all year round you can see buzzards, kestrels and ravens. In the summer sightings can include red kites, black kites, marsh harriers and occasionally sea eagles and Montagu’s harriers, and in winter rough-legged buzzards and hen harriers.

A 2-kilometre-long hiking trail leads around the Wolkenberg.

Tip: The Wolkenberg viewpoint is part of an ornithological nature trail that begins in the Pulsberg district of Spremberg. From there it leads through the reclaimed areas in different stages of development and allows walkers to observe bird species characteristic for the post-mining landscape.
