Around 1880 “Härtels Ballhaus” was the cultural heart of the town with its hall, bowling alley and restaurant. Later, the house was re-purposed as a grammar school and students including the inventor Konrad Zuse sat their university entrance examinations here. The population explosion in the Sixties and Seventies and the building of many new schools that accompanied it led to the former society house being re-purposed as a Pioneers Palace. Today the circle has drawn to a close – the building is once again the meeting point for Hoyerswerda’s cultural scene.

The KUFA (Kulturfabrik, or “Culture Factory”) provides an extensive event schedule ranging from readings to cabaret and theatre shows, from concerts by renowned artists all the way to a pub quiz. The KUFA also features the art-house cinema “BlowUp”. Special projects and workshops are also offered for children and young people, including the historical project “Clue Search”.

Since 2018 the KUFA has been home to the Gundermann Schaltzentrale, an information point with texts, videos and music from the songwriter and rock poet Gerhard Gundermann.
