A little over 340,000 years ago, during the Elster Ice Age, a landscape phenomenon was formed in the region: the “Muskauer Faltenbogen” push moraine. The landscape was pushed and broken up by glaciers, and lignite, sand and clay were pushed to the surface. Over the course of the centuries, life here was characterised by industrial activities such as mining, glass and brick making, and these have also shaped the landscape. With its vast forests, colourful lakes and rivers, and steep break-off edges, the German-Polish UNESCO Global Geopark that stretches from the Niederlausitz region all the way to Poland, it is a wonderful place to explore on foot or by bike.

The Geopark information centre in Döbern is one of several information points, where visitors can find out about the region’s peculiarities. Visitors can join themed walking and cycling tours with certified landscape guides. It is also possible to explore the Geopark on your own, using brochures that are available for download on the website. Many of the tours are suitable for families with children or school classes. A ride through the push moraine on the Muskau forest train is a must-do activity.
