The museum was founded as early as 1886 by the then “Verein für Alterthumsfreunde” (Association for the Friends of Antiquity) in Genthin and has been housed in an art nouveau villa near the railway station since 1928. It houses more than 25,000 exhibits from the region between the Elbe, Havel and Fläming rivers dating from the Ice Age, prehistoric and early historic settlement through to the 20th century. Displayed in 13 rooms, treasures of art and cultural history provide insights into the lives of farmers and citizens, crafts and associations. Visitors can find out interesting facts about the construction of the Plau Canal and the improvement measures carried out under Frederick II of Prussia, weaving and brickworks, the construction of the small railway lines and the Henkel factory, and the difficult years of the post-war period.

The journey of discovery begins in the front garden of the museum. Outstanding exhibits include the Prussian postal milestones and the rune stone from Rogäsen, which was discovered in 1851. It has not yet been possible to decipher the characters or the stone or date it. The historic bicycles are worth seeing, including a wooden bicycle made by Micheaux, Paris, in 1870, and the music boxes (polyphons) are fascinating to listen to.

In addition to temporary exhibitions, the museum team offers guided tours by appointment, themed tours for school classes, project days and a museum rally.
