The Old Market is the ideal starting point. From the dome of St Nicholas’ Church, a sweeping view of the cityscape unfolds – and even from here, it becomes clear just how closely the city is linked to the River Havel and its lakes.

Passing the main station, the route leads straight to the water’s edge and along Lake Templin towards Caputh. Time and again, small bathing spots invite you to linger – a good moment for a break on the lakeshore.

It’s well worth making a detour to the Einstein House in Caputh and Caputh Palace. Here, history comes to life: Albert Einstein spent many formative years in his summer house, whilst the castle is considered the oldest surviving building in Potsdam’s cultural landscape from the era of the Great Elector.

Before taking the ferry to Geltow, the lakeside invites you to take a relaxing break – with a view of amateur sailors, recreational swimmers and everyone enjoying the water. From Geltow, the cycle path leads back to Potsdam along the banks of the Havel. On the way, you pass the airship harbour, once a take-off and landing site for Zeppelins and now a modern sports venue with an Olympic tradition. From here, it is only a short distance back to the city centre.
