Karl Foerster (1874-1970), a famous gardener of perennials and botanical philosopher, lived and worked in Bornim, a northern district of Potsdam. In 1912 he started to cultivate perennials in his own garden for exhibition purposes and plant experiments. Karl Foerster wished to demonstrate the variety of perennials and groves while preserving the singularity of each plant. The initial site provided for six types of gardens. Foerster combined and masterfully arranged the perennials with flower bulbs, grasses and grove, perfectly coordinating the plants’ heights, blossoming seasons and colours.

The garden grounds had repeatedly been redesigned over the years. In 1981 the garden gained landmark status as the "Karl-Foerster-Gedenkstätte". On the occasion of the Federal Horticultural Show in 2001 (BUGA), the site was reconstructed as garden memorial. The adjacent nursery holds for sale the original “Foerster-Stauden” perennials.

Regular guided tours are offered from April until October. Registration by e-mail is required. Group tours are arranged at any time.
