The Alte Wache (“old guardhouse”) is located in the heart of Potsdam. This is where the merchants from Werder and Brandenburg an der Havel were inspected at the beginning of the 18th century. After the so-called second city expansion, it served as the main guardhouse. Later, Andreas Ludwig Krüger transformed the building into a prestigious structure with a classicist colonnade of columns. At that time the building housed a guardroom, the assembly chamber on the upper floor and sales stands for butchers. Today the Alte Wache houses a bank.
