The Neptune Grotto in Sanssouci Park was created between 1751 and 1757 while the numerous aquatic features were being planned. It is a unique monument dating back to the time of Frederick the Great and an example of the combination of architecture and nature in the 18th century. The design is by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff.

Seen from the main perspective, the Neptune Grotto forms a portal. At the top of the grotto is Neptune, the god of the sea, with his trident. The inner decoration of the grotto consists of shells, reed flowers and crystals. The two side pillars of the grotto are each decorated with four shell-shaped marble basins placed one below the other.

Due to a lack of technical expertise, the aquatic features did not function at the time. It was not until almost a hundred years later that they were put into operation after construction of a pump house and with the help of steam power supplied by Borsig.

Comprehensive renovation of the grotto was completed in 2018.
