Neustädter Tor in Breite Strasse was the prestigious eye-catcher when looking down the avenue to the west from the Stadtschloss or the Lustgarten. The gate’s predecessor structure was built in the course of the first city expansion in 1722. King Frederick II had the gate rebuilt by his master builder Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff as part of the prestigious redesign of the royal residence in 1752. The gate now stood further out of town at the junction of Schopenhauerstrasse and Breite Strasse.

The gate was largely destroyed during the Second World War in 1945. Only the obelisk was preserved. It was demolished in 1969 and re-erected near its original location in 1981.

The hieroglyphics on the obelisks crowned with eagles were selected according to artistic aspects; their meaning had not yet been deciphered at that time.
