The Soviet KGB had an important western outpost in Potsdam for over 40 years: the German headquarters of Soviet military counterespionage, also known as "Military Town No. 7". The central Secret Service remand prison formed the centre of the area, which is home to the Leistikowstrasse memorial building today. The history trail follows 14 sites around the city providing information on the history and function of the historical buildings, structural relics and preserved traces of the Secret Service Town. The starting point of the trail is the true-to-scale bronze model of the "Military Town" in the inner courtyard of the memorial building.

The history trail is around 2.5 kilometres long and can easily be explored on foot or by bike. The descriptions and historical photographs on the information panels help to bring to life the parts of the security complex that still exist, the home of the Head of the Secret Service and the former prison. The complex is now a memorial. QR codes provide more detailed information and photos of the different sites.
