The Soldier King, Frederick William I, urgently needed well qualified craftsmen for the extension of the garrison town. In the neighbouring country, in Holland, he found the required persons. And as the Dutchmen should feel at home in Potsdam he had about 150 brick houses built in this part of town in the middle of the 18th century. The houses are not plastered but decorated with white joints, window shutters and sometimes bended gables - like typical Dutch homes.

The quarter at the state capital Potsdam is characterised by small shops, cafés and bars. Today, it is the only comprehensive architectural ensemble in Dutch style outside the Netherlands. There even is a café which offers traditional Dutch pancakes and treats.
