The historical prison building, which has been preserved almost in its original state, is the central exhibit of the memorial. While the collection cells and sanitary facilities on the upper floors illustrate how the prison was used in the 1970s, the sparse basement cells with simple wooden bunks show the harsh prison conditions of the 1940s and 1950s. The preserved inscriptions on the cell walls are particularly impressive, reflecting the disenfranchisement and despair of the inmates. Fifty biographies illustrate the diverse backgrounds of the prisoners, who were often imprisoned for military espionage, desertion or criminal offences.
