When he was Crown Prince he was given the land as a gift and engaged two gifted artists to design it: garden architect Lenné and architect Schinkel. The successful collaboration between the two artists resulted in a masterful ensemble of landscape park and architecture. The park barely reveals a deliberate plan: everything appears natural, and yet each item is in fact positioned according to a sophisticated design so that new, unexpected views constantly appear. Unlike Baroque gardens, this landscape garden is not oriented solely towards the palace. Meadows, groups of trees, sculptures and buildings enjoy a harmonious relationship on an equal footing.
